(This is my summer side project, don’t worry–we’ll be back to regular Japan content next week!)

In today’s video I talk about the magic of proper natural lighting. If you are a seasoned photographer, this is not news to you, but for a casual creator like myself, it was all new and exciting stuff.

UPDATE: We were blogged about on The Province!

I love observing how natural light creates those ‘perfect picture’ moments. When photographers use natural light, it’s always my favorite! Nice video as always:)

0:29 Is the golden/magic hour similar to yūyake 「夕焼け」?
Back when I studied Japanese, I came across the concept of yūyake, but the translation was… cryptical — it used a word (in Portuguese) I had never seen, so I was left wondering what it might be, exactly. My teacher described it as that orange-y tone on the clouds — but that doesn’t take place every day, so I’m not sure I got the meaning right.

1:32 Oh, you’re not the only female participant!

1:41 -_- zzz

2:04 I’m pretty sure there’s an app for controlling natural light, but the Sun must be running the same OS as your smartphone. The problem is… Oracle bought it in 2010 and Sun Microsystems hasn’t been heard of ever since. Good luck finding a smartphone running pure Java :-/
